Leafy Terms

Different parts of a leaf have particular names. Some are obvious; the leaf tip is called the “tip”. Some are less obvious; the edge of the leaf is called the “margin”. Some are even less obvious; the big flat leafy bit is called the “lamina”.

The axil of a leaf isn’t even a thing, it’s a general area. The corner formed between the stem of the plant and the stem of the leaf (called the petiole). You could call them leaf armpits, maybe.

Buds which form in the axil area are called “axillary buds”. These are the buds that grow when you pinch out the apical (topmost) bud of a plant.
